SEVERTSON
Sports Media Content Creator
Bio
Cody Severtson is a hockey writer and content creator. He currently works as a full-time inventory manager for a paper company in North Delta and as a contributing writer and editor for CanucksArmy. He is from Port Moody, a proud dog dad, an expecting father, and a graduate of BCIT’s operations management program.
Cody’s writing journey began on the Canucks subreddit, recapping Utica Comets AHL games in a style imitating the Provies/Athletties series by the late Jason Botchford. The series, aptly titled The Farmies, grew to become a go-to source for Canucks fans and analysts for its data and video-driven analysis
of prospects and their development.
Cody’s work covering the Canucks farm system landed him
several features with radio programs on TSN 1040, KROCK Radio (Utica), and Sportsnet 650.
Eventually, Cody’s coverage earned him a role as the backup writer for the Provies/Athletties progeny series The Stanchies for CanucksArmy.

ThE STANCHIES
The Stanchies is a uniquely fun and detailed post-game recap series that is a descendant of the Provies/Athletties series created by the late Jason Botchford. Led by CanucksArmy’s Wyatt Arndt, the Stanchies incorporates social media and GIFs to drive engagement with Canucks fans across all manner of platforms, providing an honest perspective and review of Vancouver Canucks hockey games.

ThE farmIES
The Farmies began as a crass, grammar-less series written to kill time and provide Canucks fans with an AHL equivalent of Jason Botchford's Provies/Athletties series. The Farmies' in-depth data and video-driven prospect analysis helped the series explode, becoming the premier source for Canucks AHL prospect analysis. As the audience grew, the Farmies expanded to include microstats (CORSI) tracking, providing fans with an unprecedented depth of AHL prospect analysis not found anywhere else.

IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS
Cody’s extensive background in process improvement and inventory management resulted in many hours poured into data analysis and visualization through Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets. A favourite of Cody’s is piecing together laboriously constructed data tables using publicly available data with custom graphics and GIFs to help tell a story about individuals, teams, or even team history.

player focuses
Whether strictly through video analysis, highlight reels, or extensive research into a player’s career journey through their personal blog space (Please read the Yushiroh Hirano feature; dude rocks), Cody constantly explores new ways of telling stories.

interviews
Not just a basement blogger, Cody’s impressive work with the Farmies got him picked as the fourth representative of The Botchford Project, a journalism program jointly created by the Vancouver Canucks media team and local media members in honour of Jason Botchford’s legacy. Despite working as an independent blogger, his work covering the Farm got him credentialed to cover AHL games during the Abbotsford Canucks’ inaugural season. That inaugural season resulted in several one-on-one interviews with the coaching staff and players alike for features on his site and, eventually, CanucksArmy.

podcasting
On top of writing, tracking stats, and doing radio shows, Cody co-hosted The Creasecast, a twice-weekly show covering the Vancouver Canucks and NHL at large. Cody was most proud of a self-hosted show that tied in current NHL events, the then-news of a mass grave discovery at the Kamloops residential school, and his family’s place in Canada’s troubled history with the Indigenous community.
